The dance in the rhythm – Kim Wan-Sun (Drama Mask Girl ost) Old K-pop, My Favorite K-pop

I was delighted when I heard this song in the teaser for Netflix’s upcoming Korean drama ‘Mask Girl.’ It’s Kim Wan-Sun’s ‘The Dance Within the Rhythm (1987).

This is a 1987 song by the iconic K-pop diva Kim Wan-Sun, who made a sensational debut in Korea with her daring style and concept, garnering significant attention. The lyrics speak of being captivated by someone dancing to the rhythm, and it truly reflects the hearts of those watching Kim Wan-Sun’s performances.

Even in 2023, Kim Wan-Sun remains actively engaged in the industry. What is remarkable is that she continues her career as a dance singer, in a somewhat conservative society like Korea where not getting married is considered unusual. In fact, female celebrities who were not even in their thirties often faced questions like, ‘When will you get married?’ in official interviews.

Despite the prevailing social atmosphere, Kim Wan-Sun stayed true to herself and pursued her own path. She faced exploitation from her family, who were her managers when she debuted at a young age, but she never lost her determination and continued her life as a singer.

In the same vein, we have other singers like ‘Uhm Jung-hwa,’ but before her, there was ‘Kim Wan-Sun.’ I hope both of these singers, who have carried on the legacy of K-pop divas, leave behind a timeless impression on everyone’s hearts.

My Favorite K-pop : Fire – Hwang Puha

I once had the chance to witness Hwang Puha’s performance at a small venue. He was a singer who proved to be even more exceptional in a live setting than in recordings. The song ‘Fire’ carried a somewhat melancholic touch to its lyrics. It conveyed the story of an individual who, despite growing older, still holds on to the scars and passion of youth. Within the depths of his quiet and dark inner self, he discovers a small flame – a relentless spark that continues to burn, prompting him to eventually walk towards it.

Besides being a musician, Hwang Puha also serves as a pastor. He is a voice for the little beings, those pushed aside by capital, the owners of small enterprises, and the workers who have been stripped of their rights.

Perhaps, when observing his actions, this song might embody his true inner voice. And when listening to his live performance, one can truly sense the depth of sincerity that emanates from within.
